Guacamelee! & Cross-Control

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Hello Internet, Graham from DrinkBox here.

One of the new features of Guacamelee! that we’ll be demoing at PAX this coming weekend, is the ability to use the PS Vita as a controller for the PS3 version of the game. This is done by simply connecting the Vita to the PS3 while Guacamelee! is running (via Remote Play):

Cross control IN ACTION

You may be wondering, “Why is that desk so messy? Are those Rold Gold pretzels?” and perhaps also “I love my PS3 controller.. Why would I want to play the game with a Vita as the controller?”

Well there are a number of reasons. First, the Vita has an amazing D-PAD. It’s like your left thumb is receiving a massage from a Swedish masseuse. If you prefer to play with a D-pad, it’s a pretty nice method of control.

You can also use the Vita as a second controller if you want to play in co-operative mode and don’t have 2 PS3 controllers. Note: this is only possible if you have at least one friend, or are ambidextrous.

Co-operative Play

But, the biggest convenience this mode of play offers is that the mini-map is displayed on the Vita screen at all times. This will help to guide the player to their next destination, or find secret areas, without having to pause the gameplay to enter the mini-map.

Mini-map

As NeoGaf has pointed out, we may not be the first to do this, but we still think it’s pretty cool, and actually a useful way to play the game.

If you’re coming to PAX, be sure to stop by and try it out. We’ll be at booth 772, in the Indie MegaBooth right across from the PAX 10! You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see an inflatable luchador.

I LIKE BIG BLOBS AND I CANNOT LIE

Stop counting your sleeps, stop looking at your watch, and quit your jibber jabber, SUCKA!, because Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is NOW available on Steam NOW for PC.  And NOW it’s 10% off the full price of $7.99!  If your limbs are flailing uncontrollably, please use this time to take a few deep breaths to recompose yourself before continuing on.  It’s ok, we’re excited too.

#HASHTAG

Now you might be thinking “What’s a hashtag doing in a blog post?”  Well, FANCY PANTS, head on over to Twitter and write a blob-themed haiku (140 character limit, and please keep it clean).  On August 17th, we will select 10 haikus and give their authors a code valid for a FREE COPY of MUTANT BLOBS ATTACK on Steam.  You should probably call up your high-school English teachers and thank them for helping you get a free copy of Mutant Blobs Attack!

In case you can’t remember your haiku lessons, here’s an example:

There you go.  Forty-seven characters of transcendence.  That’s all it takes.  Tweet all haikus to @MutantBlob or @drinkboxstudios for a chance to win!  Winners will be contacted via direct message, so be sure to follow us so we can contact you.

Congratulations to IGN users Chronorayven and Andrew for winning a free copy of the game by leaving a comment on our last IGN blog post.  Also, congrats to twitter users @unluckyrose, @balrod16, and @gmanvg who won by participating in our contest via Twitter.

DRINKPAX

At PAX Prime, August 31 – September 2, come chat with us at the Drinkbox Studios booth – booth 772 – as we will be showing off Mutant Blobs Attack on PC and our upcoming lucha libre-themed, Metroidvania 2D platformer. Guacamelee!  Last year at PAX, we had four lucky contest winners who won the chance to be background characters in Mutant Blobs Attack.  So, in a way, part of them will live on FOREVER.  With that being said, how can you afford to not visit our booth?  We have a lot of fun things planned.  Hope to see you there!  And if you can’t make it, be sure to follow us on Twitter @MutantBlob and @drinkboxstudios for loads of PAX Prime antics!

IF THE BLOB WERE PRESIDENT, IT WOULD BE BLOB-RAHAM LINCOLN

Hey hey!

Matthew from Drinkbox Studios here with some big news about our hit game for the PlayStation®Vita ‘Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!’  No, we aren’t submitting it to IGN’s top 10 longest game titles list.  Instead, Mutant Blobs Attack is being released on Steam tomorrow!  And it will be 10% off the full price of $7.99 for seven days!  And once you get it, you’ll be able to enjoy it for UNLIMITED DAYS!  Now I’m no mathematician, but I’m pretty sure that means Mutant Blobs Attack! works out to be around zero dollars per day in the long run.  That’s less than your daily cup of coffee.  Heck, that’s less than water.  So, on August 15th be ready to get your Blob on like Donkey Kong!

Are you a bad enough dude/dudette to watch our brand-spanking-new Steam launch trailer?

Jump, absorb, and slam your way through this much-loved puzzle-platformer… now in HD!  Use the blob’s powers of flight and telekinesis to get to those hard to reach places.  Roll around fancy, updated mini-levels, tailored for the PC version!  Compare your score to the rest of the world on the Steam leaderboards, kind of like that international sporting event in that English country that ended two days ago.

Please don’t sue us!!!

THANKS TO OUR BETA TESTERS!

The Blob wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the generous help of our beta testers.  They say it takes a village to raise a child.  Well, the same thing applies here, except everyone in this village has a PC, and the child is a green blob with pointy purple bits.  This was our first beta, and we were a little unsure about how effective it would be.  Somehow, from one blog post and one tweet, we got a fantastic group of intelligent, professional people who made the beta run like a well-oiled machine.  So thank you beta testers from all of us at Drinkbox!

Before I go, at the end of our beta we ran a small contest to see who could identify the most objects in the game that started with the letter ‘B’.  We had two winners who won two REAL LIFE posters of IN GAME art.  They had some creative responses.

From tester ‘Chuky’: bibelot, banderole, banquette, and, pictured below, is a bight (69) and a belt (52).  If you thought 52 was a different b-word, I have to ask you, do you think of your mother with that brain?

And from ‘Brkfst’, the legendary Beerapult.  Yes, that is a beer keg loaded in a catapult… in a football training camp… that has deadly lasers… BEERAPULT!

Stay tuned here and on Twitter @mutantblob or @drinkboxstudios for more exciting announcements in the next few days!
