New DrinkBox Game Announced–Guacamelee!

Hi all, Graham here.

I’m excited to finally unveil the new game DrinkBox Studios has been working on: Guacamelee!

Announce Trailer

Guacamelee! features a down on his luck Mexican named Juan Aguacate, who sets out to save the world when El Presidente’s Daughter is kidnapped by an Evil Charro Skeleton. The story takes place in and around a small village in Mexico, and has the player travelling through alternate dimensions including “The World of the Dead” and “The World of Nightmares” on his quest to rescue the girl he loves.

The game draws its inspiration from traditional Mexican culture and folklore, and features many interesting and unique characters.

With this title, we’re looking to build upon the classic open-world, Metroid-vania style of games by adding a strong melee combat component, a new dimension switching mechanic, and co-operative same-screen multiplayer for the entire story. We are also attempting to blur the boundaries between combat and platforming by making many of the moves you perform useful for both of these.

The project is currently being developed with financial participation from the Canada Media Fund. Platforms and release dates are TBD.

A playable version of the game will be shown at Digifest’s First Person Show in Toronto on October 30th. We love having people play test the game, so if you are in the area, do make sure to drop by. It’s Free!

  1. Colin says:

    This is looking awesome guys. Pity I’m in Scotland and won’t be making the First Person Show.

    Look forward to seeing more of Gucamelee and his insane abilities.

  2. TheSTAGcast says:

    It would be quite depressing if you neglected to release a native Linux version.

  3. This Random Gamer says:

    @Toronto…..etc… That is definitely spam.

    But why is there the Xbox “Y” button on the trailer? Trying to release this on the Arcade? If so that will be great!
